Chinese Landscape Painting: From Chance to Form

This course explores the creative meeting point between chance and intention through the traditions of Chinese landscape painting. Beginning with ink marbling, participants will create papers rich in spontaneous movement and natural pattern — abstract grounds that suggest clouds, mountains, or flowing water.

From these surfaces, students will learn to recognise and develop forms using brush and ink, drawing inspiration from classical Chinese approaches to composition and structure. Through practical demonstrations and individual guidance, participants will study key techniques such as tonal ink washes, atmospheric layering, and expressive line work.

The course will balance technical learning with creative exploration, encouraging participants to respond intuitively to the marks before them while deepening their understanding of traditional brush methods. By the end of the week, students will have produced a series of expressive ink landscapes that integrate spontaneity with structure and reflect both personal vision and classical influence.
