The Ornamental Traditions of Mamluk Cairo

The King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts is delighted to offer a unique five-day workshop led by three talented ceramic artists—graduates of the Jameel House of Traditional Arts in Cairo. On this course, participants will explore the rich ornamental traditions of Mamluk-era Cairo through drawing and ceramic painting.

You’ll begin by learning how to construct geometric patterns and biomorphic motifs inspired by traditional designs. Over the following days, you’ll apply these skills to create a hand-painted ceramic tile border, guided by expert tutors who share their unique insights to blending traditional design with contemporary craft.

Whether you're a designer, artist, or enthusiast, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to engage with Cairo’s artistic heritage through hands-on making and creative exploration.
