From Line to Light: Silverpoint Drawing
Drawing is a foundational practice in the traditional arts, used both as a finished form and as a means of developing ideas for painting and other visual work. This course focuses on how drawing in silverpoint, a medium used from the Renaissance to the present, can help us improve our understanding of light, shadow, form, and value.
Students will study how artists have used tonal drawing to shape their visual language, whether as independent works or as preparation for colour. Studio work will concentrate on building tonal control through monochromatic drawing, developing clarity in contrast, structure, depth, and the relationship between light and dark.
On this course, silverpoint is approached as a practical tool for this exploration. Students will learn how ground preparation affects tonal range and mark‑making, and how careful control of surface and material supports drawing practices.
